During the preparation for an exhibition in Tel Aviv (2009) they made numerous video recordings which reference Graffiti based on a quotation of H.P.Lovecraft.

Marek Wasilewski and Dominik Lejman´s work touches upon two themes. One – the chance of transgressing the boundary of quotation and the challenge to express oneself visually in a specific moment. The second - architecture as a cultural and sociological phenomenon. This theme is illustrated in their work “Happiness” which is directly inspired by urban architecture (referring to a book by Alain de Botton “Architecture of Happiness” ).

Maša Jazbec starts this talk with a short introduction of Artium Speculum Festival in Trbovlje. She the presents her last work, an interactive installation called “Monolith”(2012) . The public is the focal point of this work, as Monolith can reproduce a digital image of people approaching this installation. This work can be seen as a chance to discuss the importance of the digital world nowdays and the ripercussion of this in the analog world. The work stimulates a series of questions about the existence of the individual in the digital space, the importance of new media art and the relationship between techologies and humans.

THE DIGITAL NOW – Look up in the sky!

On April 16th, Look, up in the sky! a mini-symposium with Honor Harger (art director Lighthouse, Brighton) and James Bridle (artist, publisher and technologist)) on art and drones in the age of ubiquitous technology will be held at BOZAR – Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels. The symposium’s debate will be opened by Bram Crevits, curator of the exhibition ‘Drones/Birds : Princes of Ubiquity’, and moderated by Michel van Dartel (V2_Institute for unstable Media).

The first series of The Digital Now, entitled ‘Drones / Birds: Princes of Ubiquity’, is inspired by the way birds are reflecting our contemporary relation with technology. For this, inspiration is drawn from the New Aesthetic with a focus on the ways we experience our digital condition: always on, always there. Drones or UAV’s (Unmanned Arial Vehicles) have been related to this New Aesthetic debate ever since it started. The New Aesthetic has been a remarkable and often intense debate for about two years now, spread across platforms, groups, scenes, blogs, catalogues, sprint-books and festivals in off- and online worlds.

‘Drones / Birds: Princes of Ubiquity’ taps into the debate of an increasing autonomous technology, connected to a machinic vision, the post-human and the New Aesthetic. Core to the exhibition are digital artifacts and instances of the computational or digital in nature.

The exhibition is curated by Bram Crevits (BE) and will present work by internationally acclaimed artists such as David Bowen (US), Theo Burt (UK), Paolo Cirio (IT), Marcus Coates (UK),Christoph De Boeck & Patricia Portela (BE/PT), Dries Depoorter (BE), HC Gilje (NO), Esther Polak & Ivar van Bekkum (NL), Erica Scourti (GR), Addie Wagenknecht (US) and Zimoun (CH).

Ulrich Fischer (SUI)

Ulrich Fischer talks about his beginnings in traditional filmmaking and latter attempt to get outside of the traditional cinema, back to the everyday life by trying to experiment more and more with open images. In his early works there are some experimental movies, animations, documentaries, installations and even some cooperations with the dance companies within them he was dancing with the projector itself.

You can be in the interaction with the real space by creating something, what is today way of making things, but the data world which is also around us gives us the access to the other dimensions of this real world.

Later on he mentions very interesting project called Walking the edit, what is basically the system which allows you to interact with the images which were placed in the public space previously in very simple and intuitive way. Nowadays it exists like a free iPhone app’ “WE” that records your trajectory with the internal GPS and it is very simple to use- by pressing the button you start to record yourself and get the access to information about where are you, how do you move, where do you come from and perhaps where are you going to. Later on you get the access to data, the documents which are related to the place you are in and you edit them by walking.

Don Foresta, artist involved in new technologies as artistic tools for 40 years, is talking about his beginning in new media art, shooting videos, using telecommunication networks as a space for artistic experimentation, exchange and creation, and also sending images between Boston and Paris through telephone so called slow scan.

New technologies has been always something quite interesting from several points of view. One is how artists really take the tools and go somewhere else with them.

In the next part of interview he is talking about importance of network which will be dominant in future. In relation of network and culture Don is saying that culture should stay cultural not commercial territory. Also he is talking about programs such is Skype that tool is not good enough for art.

Espen Gangvik, director of Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre organizing the biennale for art and technology in Trondheim Meta.Morf talks about the conference series Consciousness reframed 11 with subtitle Making reality really real. This conference is hosted by Roy Ascott, founding president of the Planetary Collegium an advanced research center which he set up in 2003 at the University of Plymouth, UK, where he is Professor of Technoetic Arts. As Espen Gangvik says, the main goal of this Biennale for art and technology is to be a kind of inspiration by showing the examples of good art which is not just about the gadgets.

The next thing to do is to convince those who produce art within the field of art and technology to also make concepts and be aware of art history and also be conscious about making projects that also has a good artistic concept. Because, you know, we have that kind of danger that if you do something fancy technology and say- “hey mom, look no hands”, it doesn't mean it is a good art at all.
