After his concert at the MoTA Point in Ljubljana, Jason Lescalleet talks to Žiga Pucelj about the experience of the performance in this specific space and his approach to live performance. He talks about his recent project THE TROPHY TAPE, a collaboration project with 13 artists to create videos for the 13 tracks that comprise the first disc of his SONGS ABOUT NOTHING. He explains some of the processes behind his live performances, collaborations and productions and introduces his new record Much To My Demise, coming up on Kye Records.

In this talk VALIE EXPORT , austrian performance and media artist reflects about the specific characteristics and the use of new media in context of the traditional, patriarchal art system in the 50ties and 60ties. That includes also the museum as an traditional repressive art institution and the modification of terms and their meaning in art history. In her opinion, art is always a reflection of society and conditions in which one has to live.

She experienced at this time society as very conservative, traditional and limited, while feminism, conceptual art and other new art directions were completely novel. New ways of thinking, new disputes and consequently a strong conviction that one had to work with new media. And at the same time new media also meant that female artists could express themselves in a new way especially due to the lack of establishes conventions.

incite/, the Hamburg based electronic duo, consisting of Kera Nagel and André Aspelmeier presents in this Artist Talk within the framework of the 15th WRO Media Art Biennale in Wrocław their brandnew show “Holistic Loop”. The audiovisual pieces, that were prepared especially for WRO concert refer to special subjects, this time the focus is on Hamburg. Furthermore they reflect on the quality of a record as a specific carrier medium and its influence on perception of music in general.

In the 2nd part of the talk Jacek Zachodny presents his another ongoing project Death XXI consisting of over 100 video interviews conducted since 2004 in Poland, France and India in which his speakers share their ideas and expectations of death resulting from their personal experiences, cultures and religions they belong to. It’s a work resulting from growing video archives, changing during the process of its creation. The artist’s interest in death, transience and processes resulting from passing of time are also the subjects of the animation Cross and a stop-motion video animation Stories 2 showing degradation of a photograph, placed in his garden.

"My idea was to build up a shared, human experience regarding death and then record it". (...) "My main art path is video, besides I make installations, I sculpt, write and publish. I perceive process of creation as an utterly, creative everyday, creative life. There are different aspects of creation, if I need to use a chisel, I take one."

Karol Radziszewski – #2

In the 2nd part of the presentation, Karol Radziszewski recapitulates the path traveled already to realize his latest project America Is Not Ready For It. The inspiration and starting point for the film was the polish artist Natalie LL´s stay in New York in 1977.

Thirty-four years later he decided to travel to America to meet with artist and gallery owners, which Natalia LL met during her stay in US. Based on a few black-and-white-photographs and some names he began his artistic investigation. He interviewed Marina Abramovic, Carolee Schneemann, AA Bronson, the galerist Antonio Homem, critic Douglas Crimp(…). These protagonists recall the atmosphere of New York in the 1970s and convey a picture of what Natalia LL could be confronted with at this time. Karol Radziszewski raises a series of questions on issues such as conceptual art, feminist art, gender, queer and East-West relations and their impact in the art world during times of the Iron Curtain.

What i find important in all my projects, is to explore the border of history, history of art and personal life the illusory universality and an attempt to separate art from personal life , whether someone is a woman or a man, black, gay or whatever.

Liliana Orbach is an argentinian interdisciplinary, video artist and curator based in Tel Aviv. In this talk she elaborates the general motivation and approach of her art work. The work is intend to be global while dealing with conditions of human being and issues that in general move us. A meaningful subject beside working with moving images is matching the visual with the verbal language.

She is presenting two of her recent works , that are representative for her themes of interest and the interdisciplinary method. The first major theme is about the search of silence. The project lasts about four years and consists of video installation and interviews asking people about their own silences.

The second project has its starting point in a music composition “Goldberg Variations” by Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with a poet an a dance performer she created 8 videoworks that incorporate collected lines of a series of poems.

For the MutaMorphosis 2012 panel on Time and Technology, plan b (Daniel Belasco Rogers & Sophia New) will contribute with a performative lecture about their sousveillance work together, recording every journey they make out of doors with a GPS and other collecting practices. The GPS practice, started in 2003 by Daniel and 2007 by Sophia, not only represents the attempt by the artists to see ‘the drawing of their lives’ but serves as a digital mnemonic, a record that can prompt a day-by-day recall of their lives through playing back their own traces. This mnemonic attempt is exemplified in the work ‘Narrating Our Lines’, where they attempt to remember the private events of 2007 as played back to them in the form of GPS traces in 2010, shown first in its intended configuration at Art Laboratory Berlin earlier this year, an excerpt of which they will present in the panel.

This practice has also extended to collecting every text message the couple have sent each other since 2006, a collection that has formed the material for the performance ‘A Message To You’ in which a year’s worth of text messages are shouted out in a public space, as well as ‘The printing of every text message we sent each other since 2007′, a work for dot matrix printer that was seen at the exhibition ‘Tracing Mobility’ at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in December 2011.

Ivana Sremčević (director) and Nenad Kesić (responsible for artworks) present VideoMedeja, international new media festival focused on video which was established in February 1998 by curators, art board members, producers, organizers and volunteers. Its primary aim was to promote video creativity, related artistic forms and avant-garde art with an emphasis on women’s perspective. Nowadays it is an annual presentation of new media art in very broad sense, from video, performance, very classical single channel video installation to hybrid art and network based projects taking place in serbian city Novi Sad.

People (in Serbia) even don't know what is the video, so the first step is to learn them about new technologies and who knows, maybe in the future there can be some categories like a women's video and the others.

Marcel·lí Antúnez Roca (ES)

Marcel·lí Antúnez Roca has been making robotic installations and complex mechatronic performances more than twenty years. He focuses on themes such as sexuality, violence, love and death, using robotic body control systems, interactive image control and exoskeletal interfaces. However, he says that he is more interested in symbolic and story telling rather than technical background. On the occasion of the Mob conference in Prague he does a presentation divided into two main parts- his early works and several works from nineties to his latest installation Metamembrana. He even uses an exoskeleton to demonstrate how it works.

I try to follow the the old tradition of art. For me the technology is only one step further.

At last, he mentions Woody Vasulka and his admiration of Viennese actionism.

Megan Daalder (USA)

In the interview, Daalder speaks about her performance Tribute to Karl Sims, in which she re-creates on stage the choreography of virtual cuboid creatures projected on the screen. The movements of the creatures are generated by genetic algorithms emulating human life processes. It’s the meeting of human being and artificial life.
I'm pushing myself in a direction I've never been before.
It’s a sort of need to evoke both for the machine and a human being.
