Nik Nowak performed with Panzer in Ljubljana in November 2013 during the Sonica Festival and in support of the Radio Student. In the interview he talks about his background and process, the ideas behind Panzer and his ongoing research on mobile sound system cultures across the globe.

Nik Nowak’s Panzer (2011) is a sound system made from metal frame of garbage container which works on the principle of hydraulics. It is made in the manner of Jamaican sound systems but places itself in contemporary sound research that problematize sound as the mean of manipulation and control of the crowds in contemporary society. The project is thus a crossroad of contemporary theoretical research in the field of sound, sound art, popular culture and scientific research in the field of military technologies. Panzer works as mobile sound system which through the form of intervention in public spaces reflects Jamaican musical culture from 70′s that is highly present in modern club culture and in electronic dance music. Panzer is an excellent example of coexistence of different concepts in contemporary sound art and in popular culture. The work was premiered at Todays Art festival 2012 and later on CTM in Berlin.

Nik Nowak is younger German artist, who lives and works in Berlin. Between 2001-2007 he studied Fine Arts at Universität der Künste (UdK) and finsished his master degree by prof. Lotar Baumgartner. Later on he studied also in Shanhgai and New York City. In his work Nowak is entering the traces of electornic music in the contemporary art environment, in the field of sculptures that has in Germany more than thirty years of tradition under the term Klangkünste. In wider context we can place his work in sound art. He is most interested in mobile, moving sound sculptures, which at the same time operate as mobile sound systems with which he is penetrating gallery spaces, clubs and public spaces in the form of sonic intervetions. He has so far present his work in Den Haag, moscow, Berlin, Hamburg, Wien and Shanghai.

“...in Manila you see slums everywhere but maybe the working class and the upper class tend to blind themselves from this reality. So they were very thankful to see the movie.”

Khavn, writer, musician and filmmaker, talks about his latest movie, his 34th feauture film “Mondomanila” (2012) and its different aspects. The original idea, the message that the movie communicates, the relations with the crew and the impressions of the audience. In the interview we discussed different levels and segments of such multi-creativity: such as making of one-day flicks, the process of writing novels and the role that music plays in his various works. Also, how the everyday reality of Manila, along with its cult independent and underground cinema scene influenced his style.

This interview was recorded during 23rd Liffe, Ljubljana

In celebration of the first two years of ArtistTalk project, MoTA has started a publication series MoTA Editions. We are proud to announce the first edition: Outerviews.

Outerviews. Conversations with artists is comprised of 17 interviews with artists, selected from the archive of the ArtistTalk project. Outerviews presents authors active in a variety of artistic fields, ranging from film, video, painting, sound, performance and many trans-medium approaches. The conversations included illuminate the processes behind the making of art works, which in have in our view proposed the most interesting challenges to the common conceptions of art.

From the foreword: »OUTERVIEWS presents a mosaic of different personas, hailing from different backgrounds and active in a large variety of artistic fields, some very hard to pin down. But we claim that what unifies these artists in their very different approaches, is a drive to contribute to social reality in a highly critical, yet constructive way. Our approach in these conversations was therefore in looking for world views – the underlying observations and individual positioning in the world, which is a prerequisite for any socially engaged artistic practice.«

Included artists: Zbig Rybczyński / Eyal Sivan / Harun Farocki / Piotr Krajewski / Jorge Rodriguez Gerada / Arjan Pregl / Societe Realiste / Zimoun / Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen / Emptyset / Plaid / Burnt Friedman / Julian Oliver / Roy Ascott / Joe Davis / Ion Sorvin – N55 / Biennale de Paris

Artists included: The pioneering works of experimental filmmakers to documentary/film essayists (Zbig Rybczynski, Eval Sivan, Harun Farocki); Jorge Rodriguez Gerada, visual artist known for numerous guerrilla public art and large scale public portraits using sand, charcoal, gravel, etc; Société Réaliste, whose works deal with political design, experimental economy, territorial ergonomy and social engineering consulting; Arjan Pregl, whose paintings combines three key elements: constructive criticism of art theory, humour, and political engagement; Zimoun, whose use of plain industrial materials, such as cardboard boxes, mechanical motors, create monumental sound architectures; Lilibeth Cuenca, who navigates the interspaces between different kinds of realities and extremes, between the perfect staging of music videos and raw reality of documentaries, between personal confessionals and political commitment; Emptyset, whose electronic music explores the legacy of analogue media, integrating aspects of rhythm, signal processing and spatial recording within the framework of minimalist composition; Plaid, who reinvented electronic dance music (Warp) and film scores (Tekkonkinkreet, etc); Julian Oliver, a critical engineer, programmer whose works expose and challenge mechanisms behind the products of technology we use in daily life; n55, the art collective whose projects blend art with every day life often creating situations and modular architecture systems that try to “rebuild the city from within;” Alexandre Gurita, who hacked one of the first art biennals in the world, Biennale De Paris, to reinvent its function and role in the now biennal flooded world; the artist, philosopher, and pioneering theorist Roy Ascott, who works with cybernetics and telematics; Joe Davis, the man who implemented a fragment of Heraclitus into the gene of the white eyes of fruit flies, who made bacteria listen to jazz, who grew the information about intrasitivity of human being back to the biological world…

The book is out and in circulation now.

The book was launched at the opening of 15th WRO Media Biennale.

Nahan Brock talks about the specifics of both technological and artistic challenge brought by the development of hi-speed data networks.

Artistic performance is area taking advantage of the accessibility of managed networks. Musicians in particular are using low-latency networks for telematic performances, in which players at several geographically separated locations play together synchronously, with audiences at each node. Musicians have famously low tolerance for delay, and these performances are excellent test cases for networks and networking technologies. Dancers, actors, and visual artists also participate in these events. Several different techniques for managing delay will be presented, along with video examples. These telematic performances bring together artists in novel ways, and create new environments that challenge previously accepted ideas of mediated space, interactivity, and audience perspective, while investigating the semiotics of remote collaboration in ways that could influence future generations of networked appliances.

Telematic performance is the process of having performances in which musician and other artists are positioned in geographically separate locations, collaborating together in real time over a network.

His work unfolds today in many areas and the outskirts of her musical universe, he worked on image for interactive programming facilities, staging and seeks above all to question the relationship dynamic performance spaces. He now claims the practice of “active” music in its physical dimension [gestures, energy, space] as psychological [evocation, memory, cinematic]. In parallel to his compositions, it also occurs for performance, solo or in formation with other artists.
