While we celebrate the explosion of open source software and collaborative projects like Wikipedia, visual art has not enjoyed similar levels of passionate and generous online contribution. Open culture has developed inspiring text-based collaborative models, but has yet to develop successful models for open collaboration on visual culture. Wikipedia Illustrated seeks to develop such models. Through 26 illustrated articles, a blog that follows the production and a set of workshops we hope to develop a methodology for contributing creative-commons licensed illustrations to Wikipedia.

The talk will address the questions at the heart of this project. Is the visual aspect of Wikipedia so lacking and dated because it could only use freely licensed images? Or is it that images have to become “historical” to become removed, objective, factual, and therefore applicable to the Wikipedia guidelines? Is the Wikipedia project really inviting visual artists to contribute their work to the commons? Or is visual work inherently less collaborative? As the project evolves it exposes the myths and biases behind these questions and reveals the surprising and complicated dynamics of open culture.

On the discovering Timisoara by the camera and mobile phone

Encore Heureux is a parisian studio headed by the architects Julien Choppin and Nicola Delon. They talk about their projects in which they discover the cities by the camera and mobile phone.

Traveling is the way to getting inspired.

They present the exhibition Crumbs of paradise they curated. It was a collective exhibition commissioned by French institute which took place in Timisoara, Romania. As Julien Choppin and Nicola Delon said, it was a result of collaboration between them, two others young french photographers and two young romanian photographers living in France, so it was kind of cultural exchange as well. Considering they wanted to focus mainly on the meaning of the photography, not the technique, they chose the cheap materials for this particular exhibition- plenty photos were installed on plasterboard (which can be reused later on), fixed just by tapes and explained in handwritten text.

Rasa Smite talks about what attracts her the most about new media art, namely about a collaboration of people from very different background which can bring interesting new ideas and a social interaction.

The new media came with the interesting idea of collective creation, that artists can work collectively and in different type of collaborations they can find new realms, develop new ideas and come up with novel themes.

Later on she describes current situation in Latvia as a post-soviet country, where people often feel very isolated, and how they can suddenly realized they are also a part of European market thanks to art. And lastly she mentions here expectations and 22 century vision.
