An interview with Nikola Uzunovski during his Alien workshop at Sonica Festival. Nikola Uzunovski is a Macedonian visual artist and architect. Uzunovski’s work focuses on the conceptual and empirical analysis of natural and perceptible phenomena, paying great attention to the relationship established between subjects and their environment. During Sonica Festival 2016 he created Alien, a sci-fi sculpture that draws its inspiration from socrealistic moments of our not too distant past.

We talked to Julian Bayle about his latest work, a Sonica commission, which deals with the physics of concrete and its decay. Bayle is a French multidisciplinary independent artist, who merges visual art, music composition, physical approach of sound art and data visualization by creating advanced programmed installations and audio/visual live performances. He tries to address the question of disrupted continuum, interferences and representation of concepts by using physics of sound and error/artifact magnification.

Julien Bayle was one of 2016 Sonica Festival resident artists. He created the generative installation Fract for the Sonic Pavillion exhibition.

CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE: ArtistTalk
Sunday, 27 September 2015 at 11am
MoTA Point, Gosposvetska 12, Ljubljana

ArtistTalk with the legendary composer Charlemagne Palestine about his work and a screening of his early video works on the border of performance, ritual and intense audiovisual experience.

In the seventies, Charlemagne Palestine recorded a series of videos through which he explored his music and performed he limitis of his psychologic and physical capabilities. In them, we are witnessing particular rituals and delicate but simoultaneously raw sound and spatial studies. In their center is Charlemagne’s body in the limits of voice and movement and sometimes bordering violence. Palestine weighs the resonance of his body into the resonance of space. This space becomes a field of intense forces pulsating from the image, which is understood as an extension or as a part of his own body. Through rituals, chants, tones and rapid movement, these forces merge into radical psychological states and are revealed to us through the image. Sometimes Charlemagne’s view is also ours, and sometimes it speaks to us directly. We become both visitors and participants. At the same time, he enters our bodies through sharp sounds and leads us into his world of beauty, anxiety and pain.

Program:
Body Music I, 1973-74, 12:54 min
Dark Into Dark, 1979, 19:28 min
Ritual In The Emptyness, 2001, 12:04 min

Martin Bricelj interviews Martin Messier on his influences, music and art before his performance with Sewing Machine Orchestra at MoTA Point in Ljubljana.

Martin Messier is a composer, performer and new media artist who explores the relationship between sound and material. His complex sound aesthetics comes from experimental music background, intertwined with uncommon sounds and rhythmic interplays in an endless process of construction and deconstruction. He explores the relationship between sound and material in his staging sound works and pushes the everyday imaginary a little further in his installation works and performances by reinventing the functions of objects. His concerts, sound and audiovisual performances, works in the field of live electronics, music for theatre and contemporary dance were presented on numerous international festivals, such as Mutek (Montreal), Festival TransAmériques (Montreal), Bang on a Can (New York), Transmediale (Berlin) and Sonar (Barcelona).

Martin Bricelj Baraga is an artist and curator, director of MoTA – Museum of Transitory Art. His interactive works, audiovisual performances and collaborative work research the relation between man and machine, social aspects of contemporary popular culture, future monumentalism and political dimensions of mediated realities of today.

Nik Nowak performed with Panzer in Ljubljana in November 2013 during the Sonica Festival and in support of the Radio Student. In the interview he talks about his background and process, the ideas behind Panzer and his ongoing research on mobile sound system cultures across the globe.

Nik Nowak’s Panzer (2011) is a sound system made from metal frame of garbage container which works on the principle of hydraulics. It is made in the manner of Jamaican sound systems but places itself in contemporary sound research that problematize sound as the mean of manipulation and control of the crowds in contemporary society. The project is thus a crossroad of contemporary theoretical research in the field of sound, sound art, popular culture and scientific research in the field of military technologies. Panzer works as mobile sound system which through the form of intervention in public spaces reflects Jamaican musical culture from 70′s that is highly present in modern club culture and in electronic dance music. Panzer is an excellent example of coexistence of different concepts in contemporary sound art and in popular culture. The work was premiered at Todays Art festival 2012 and later on CTM in Berlin.

Nik Nowak is younger German artist, who lives and works in Berlin. Between 2001-2007 he studied Fine Arts at Universität der Künste (UdK) and finsished his master degree by prof. Lotar Baumgartner. Later on he studied also in Shanhgai and New York City. In his work Nowak is entering the traces of electornic music in the contemporary art environment, in the field of sculptures that has in Germany more than thirty years of tradition under the term Klangkünste. In wider context we can place his work in sound art. He is most interested in mobile, moving sound sculptures, which at the same time operate as mobile sound systems with which he is penetrating gallery spaces, clubs and public spaces in the form of sonic intervetions. He has so far present his work in Den Haag, moscow, Berlin, Hamburg, Wien and Shanghai.
